Carnival in Xaghra 2009 - Come and Participate
The Xaghra Local Council once again kept the Carnival tradition in our locality by organising another edition of the Xaghra Carnival entitled - Come and Participate.
The Xaghra Carnival is popularly known for the fact that it does not insult people and subsequently, it gives fun to everyone. The main Carnival programme was held on Friday 20th February, 2009. At 6.30pm, the Victory Philarmonic Band of Xaghra started parading from the club s premises in Maria Bambina Street along 8th September Avenue and moved forward to Victory Square where the Carnivalesque activity actually took place. Friday s programme was presented by popular local character, Mr. Martin Sapiano. Several dance companies, Gozitan primary schools and Carnival floats participated. The programme ended at around 11.15pm.
Another programme was held on Saturday 21st February at 7.30pm in Nazzarenu Square. The compères for Saturday s activity were Mr. Anthony Grech and Ms. Francesca Zarb. In this programme, the best costume competition took place - the costumes were classified in four categories: Category A (children up to 5 years old), Category B (children from 6 to 10 years old), Category C (children from 11 years old onwards) and Category D (Foam costumes).
The last Carnival programme was due to be presented on Tuesday 24th February. Unfortunately, the programme was cancelled due to bad weather.
IN ALL THESE TWO PROGRAMMES, the traditional Carnival dance named Il-Kumittiva was presented. The Xaghra Local Council would like to thank all the participants and those who enjoyed Carnival with us!
